Modern Art is a term guaranteed to provoke a reaction. People disagree over what it is, and even over whether it has any value at all. One thing that all the artists featured in this book, and who are generally classified as “modern”, share is that they have produced works that, at least at the time of their creation, shocked, disrupted or questioned the public’s perception of art.
The scope of this work is by nature broad. It traces all the key movements in modern art, from impressionism, symbolism and pointillism, through fauvism, cubism, surrealism, dada, bauhaus and abstract expressionism, and looks at the artistic techniques and styles that defined these particular movements. It features some of the most influential modern artists, beginning with the forefathers of modern art such as Monet, Cezanne and Matisse, through Picasso, Dali, Chagall, Duchamp and Rothko, to the work of present-day artists such as Hockney and Freud.
‘Essential Modern Art’ focuses primarily on paintings, but also covers sculpture, pop-art, photography, installations and other art forms that have been embraced by modern artists. Written with a comprehensive introduction, ‘Essential Modern Art’ looks in detail at the work of many of the most important modern masters, with detailed commentary on 120 key pieces.
