Pablo Picasso was one of the most famous and successful artists of the twentieth century. He was extraordinarily prolific; embracing many artistic styles, including Cubism and Surrealism, and he was the creator of countless paintings, sculpture, drawings, etchings, constructions, collages and ceramics. His art mirrored his life to an usual extent, but despite this profound biographical element, his style was ever-changing and evolving, in a seemingly effortless ability to promote himself and his work.
Picasso had a long and varied life, encompassing different locations, several wives, mistresses and children, and a series of deep friendships with other artists, poets and writers. This richness of culture and environment is reflected in his work; the influence of his Spanish background, the horror of the Spanish Civil War, his political beliefs, the passing of his many relationships and his contentment in the South of France towards the end of his life are all evident in his paintings.
‘Essential Picasso’ examines his work in detail, from the earliest Blue-Period paintings to the ceramics of his later years.
Written with a comprehensive introduction, Essential Picasso looks at all aspects of Picasso’s art, with detailed commentary on 120 of his works. Most of these are instantly recognisable as his most famous and important pieces; others are less well-known, but they are all equally essential to Picasso’s artistic and philosophic development.
Laura Payne is a Picasso aficionado and UK-based writer, journalist and broadcaster, who has followed the arts movement for many years, traveling the world to view Picasso’s work. She took time out from an international media career to pursue an MA in Literature and Visual Arts, and now her current area of research is British and European early modernism, in which she is working on a new critical analysis and aesthetic theory.
